Halloween Nostalgia – Heidelberg Style

Mmmm…October.  The month for eating way too much candy.

It’s the prequel to the season of eating as it really just helps us get in gluttonous shape for Thanksgiving, whichever December religious holiday eating one prescribes to, and a fancy NYE celebratory feast.  Yep…time to warm up to eating.

Thinking of all the candy I’m going to have to avoid in the office this month has made me a bit nostalgic for some of the candies I grew up with in Germany. Here’s a list of candy flavors some of us ex-pat army brats grew up with:

  • Kinder Schokolade was always a classic.  Not exactly high-class candy, but it certainly satisfied my 12 year old palate. Luckily, there are a couple places in Pike Place Market where I can pick this up if I need a stroll down memory lane.
  • Bounty bars were far more delicious than Mounds or Almond Joy.  These can also be found at almost any World Market.
  • Of the countless Ritter Sport flavors available, plain old Butter Biscuit was always my favorite.
  • Haribo Smurfs! There was something so satisfying about viciously biting Smurfs in half. It was way too easy to eat these until my stomach hurt.
  • Maoam MaoMix – I’ve never experienced a texture quite like it.
  • Milka bars would often accompany me on school trips.
  • I still have a serious love for Manner Hazelnut Wafers. I’ve often picked them up from the Bavarian Deli here in Seattle.
  • Topkuss! I’m still not sure what the filling was made of, but it sure was delicious!
  • And of course, the much loved Kinder Egg.  I’m still devastated that they have been outlawed in the US – I have such fond memories of savoring the chocolate as I assembled my toys. My crowing achievement was when my mom and I managed to collect all the pieces to a tiny Kinder Egg circus. Then the cats discovered it…

For anyone who misses these flavors, or would like to go on a German candy adventure, I’ve included some links for easy access. Enjoy!
